今国家刑罰権の恩恵の為めに、四十日と云ふ豊かな安息時を監獄の一室に与へられ、青年キリストの生涯に照して静かに我が六十年の苦難の瘡痕を点検し、
更に我が真使命の何処に存在するかを黙想することができた。

By the grace of the authority of punishment of the state he was given a quiet period of 40 days in prison.He could inspect the scars and wounds of his 60-year-long life and compare his tormented difficult life with that of a young man called Jesus Christ. |

出獄後の翁は「陸海軍の全廃」を唱へた。
また聖人の出現を夢想した。
これは爾後常に翁の胸に燃えて居たことで、
日記を見ると、折々思ひ出したやうに書きつけてある。

After he was released from the prison,he advocated the total abolition of army and navy.Also he dreamed of the coming of a saint.He kept his hope for the coming of a saint burning in his heart.He wrote in his diary about the dream here and there: |

明治四十四年の日記中にもかう書いてある。
「我れ、去る三十七年の春、神田の青年会館にて、新学生歓迎の演説に曰く、東洋に聖人が生まれ現はれるる也。
但し其の以前に一度日本は亡ぶ。
其時までは、個々専門に励みて其道の聖となるべし。

He wrote in his diary in 1911:
"I made a speech at the welcome party for the new students held at YMCA in Kanda in the spring of 1904 and said that a saint was to be born in Asia.I also warned,'Japan shall perish once before the coming of the saint.Until then I urge you to do your best in each field where you work and to be a saint of your field.'" |

翌日一学生来りて問ふ、何の証拠ありて昨夜の如き事を述べしやと。
予答、只だ我心に思ふのみと。」

"Next day a student visited me and asked,'What proof do you have to make such a statement as you did yesterday?' I answered him,'
I made the speech based on what I thought in my mind.'" |

今も世間で偶々田中翁の事を語る時に「谷中村の破壊事件」を言ふ。けれどもこの「谷中村の破壊」と云ふ一語に何が含まれて居るかを明瞭に知る者は殆ど無い。
これは翁が老後而も細密な辛苦を嘗めた事件であるが、
茲には極めて大体の輪郭を語る他に道が無い。

When people happen to speak of Grandpa Tanaka,they associate him with the destruction of Yanaka Village incident.Few people,however,know clearly the exact details of the incident.Grandpa suffered severely in every possible way during the last ten years of his life because of this incident.Here I have no choice but to describe only the rough outline of the incident. |

翁は嘗て議会で、足尾鉱毒事件は最早渡良瀬川沿岸のみの問題では無く、既に江戸川の問題であり、東京府の問題であることを叫んだ。

When he was a Diet member,Grandpa raised his voice and told the House of Representatives that the problem of the pollution caused by Ashio Copper Mine was no longer the local problem along the Watarase-gawa River but that it was the problem of the Edo-gawa River,which made it the problem of the metropolitan Tokyo. |

政府は江戸川の上流圏関宿の口を狭めて、利根川の下流を浚ひ、 |
The Government made a plan to squeeze the mouth of the Edo-gawa River at Sekiyado of the current Noda City,Chiba Prefecture and dredged the low course of the Tone-gawa River. |

更に渡良瀬川が利根へ合流する口を狭めて、洪水の時には大きな利根の水が渡良瀬の水を押へてこれを何十里逆流させ以て江戸川の氾濫を禦ぐ策を立てた。

Also they squeezed the mouth of the Watarase-gawa River where it joined the great river of the Tone-gawa.They planned to prevent the waters of the Watarase-gawa River from flowing into the Tone-gawa River.They intended this would eventually prevent floodings of the Edo-gawa River which branched out of the Tone-gawa River downstream and ran through Tokyo. |

そこでこの渡良瀬川の逆流洪水を緩和する為に渡良瀬の下流谷中村一帯の農村を亡くして、大遊水地を造ると云ふのである。

The Government planned to avolish the Ynakamura Village and construct a huge retarding basin in stead. |
| 田中翁は絶叫した。「銅山党の奸策だ。鉱毒問題を治水問題に塗り変へる銅山党の奸策だ。」 けれど翁のこの熱弁に耳を假す者は恐らく一人も無かったらう。

Grandpa Tanaka barked at the Diet,"This is a treacherous plan to help the supporters of the copper mine.They are going to switch the pollution problem to the river management problem." There was perhaps no one who listened to him. |

政府が治水会と云ふものを設け全国河川の改修諮問案を出した中に、この渡良瀬改修案も加へてある。治水会の会員には官吏技師議員など網羅してある。 |
The Government established Society of Water Management.Bureaucrats,engineers and members of the Diet were its members.It presented a plan of development of major rivers in which a plan for the Watarase-gawa River was included. |
| のみならず、今や渡良瀬川沿岸の鉱毒地ですら、一には多年の疲弊の為め、一には目前逆流洪水の損害を免れる為め、この政府の渡良瀬改修案、即ち、谷中村亡滅案を歓迎する情態で、

The farmers in the polluted area themselves welcomed the Government plan to abolish Yanaka-mura Village.They were devastated by the years' impoverishment.They thought the new plan could save them from floods. |

現に彼の凶徒嘯集罪の英雄等すら、この渡良瀬改修案の餌の為めに、多年の首領田中正造に盾を衝くことになった。

Even many of his friends who had fought with him for many years and had been arrested under the Unlawful Assembly Act were lured by the bate of the new plan and abandoned Tanaka. |

明治三十七年末の栃木県会に於て、
知事は政府の命令に従て堤防修築費の偽名の下に
三十六万円の谷中村破壊追加予算案を県会最後の日に提出した。

In the end of 1904 Governor following the order of the Government presented a budget plan of destruction of Yanaka-mura Village under the false title of the budget for maintenance of the embankment on the last day of the Prefecture Assembly. |

この間秘密の運動あり、深夜開議、質問もなく答弁もなく、
全会闇黙の裡にこれを可決通過した。

They did this in secret.The Assembly was held late at night.There was no questions nor answers.The budget plan was passed.All members of the Assembly gave their silent consent. |

田中正造
1841年12月15日 - 1913年（大正2年）9月4日Tanaka Shozo dedicated his life for the farmers who were victimized by the pollution of Ashio Copper Mine. He is one of the pioneers of environmental movement in Japan.

| 天保12年(1841) | 0才 | 11月3日（旧暦）下野国安蘇郡小中村（現栃木県佐野市小中町）に生まれる。名主富蔵の長男。
Shozo was born on December 15, in Konaka, a small village in western Aso, in what was then the fiefdom of Shimotsuke (Konaka, Sano City, Tochigi Pref.). Nanushi Tomizo's eldest son.

He was elected Nanushi by the villagers.(or age 21)
