新約聖書を読んだ後の田中正造(1)

翁の波乱の一生にとってこの四十日の監獄生活が、実に重要な一関鍵であったことは翁の知人にさへ、恐らく殆ど承認されずに過ぎたであらう。 この獄中で翁は初めて新約聖書を読んだ。

Tanaka Shozo was imprisoned for 40 days for contempt of court in 1902.These 40 days were a retreat for him.He read for the first time the New Testament.Even his close friends failed to notice how important this experience was for him.

六十年苦難の生涯、常に死地を往来して鍛錬もされ粉砕もされた失敗の経験を以て、基督の短くして永き勝利の生涯を見た。

Tanaka had his 60-year life of perpetual difficulties.He found often himself in a situation where he almost lost his life.He experienced the process of being hammered,tested and smashed.He tasted failures.Against this backdrop of his life,he saw the life of Christ which was short but ended with eternal victory.

基督がどんな風に翁の目に映ったかと想像することは、一つの興味深き問題だ。

It is another interesting topic worth being examined how Christ was viewed in the eyes of Tanaka.

若し議会に於ける翁の演説を読んだ人は、翁の性格面貌を胸裡に描くことが出来る。僕は今、基督を見た後の田中翁を説くに当り、それを一層深く君に理解して貰ひたい為に、翁の素性素質に就て、尚ほ少しく話して見たい。

If you read any of the speeches which he made at the House of Representatives,you could clearly see his character and countenance in your mind.Your intimate knowledge about his nature and character helps you to fully understand how Tanaka was changed after having read the New Testament.

田中正造 1841年12月15日 - 1913年（大正2年）9月4日Tanaka Shozo dedicated his life for the farmers who were victimized by the pollution of Ashio Copper Mine. He is one of the pioneers of environmental movement in Japan.

天保12年(1841)	0才	11月3日（旧暦）下野国安蘇郡小中村（現栃木県佐野市小中町）に生まれる。名主富蔵の長男。 Shozo was born on December 15, in Konaka, a small village in western Aso, in what was then the fiefdom of Shimotsuke (Konaka, Sano City, Tochigi Pref.). Nanushi Tomizo's eldest son.
文久元年(1861)	19才	小中村六角家領の名主に公選される（21才説も有）。 He was elected Nanushi by the villagers.(or age 21)
