自叙伝(15) Tanaka Shozo Autobiography

1884年　４２歳

宇都宮警察は何思ひけん、残虐なる振舞をなす。始めて夕食を正造に与ふ、重箱の弁当なり。側に居る巡査、煙草を呑み、其の吸殻をワザと重箱の中に落す。正造思ふやう、是れ過失ならんと。指もて之を捨てて、また、食ふ。

Utsunomiya Police,however,treated me in a cruel way.First they gave me supper.The supper was in the two bento boxes.A policeman sitting beside me smoked a cigarette.He dropped cigarette ashes into the bento box.Shozo first thought he did it by mistake.I took out the ashes and began to eat.

巡査重ねて吸殻を重箱に払ひ落し、且つ靴を以て塵埃を蹴立てて、食ふこと能はざらしめたり。正造呆れて箸を投じて食はず。其夜、警察の拘留所に投入せらる。

The constable again dropped the ashes over the bento.He also stamped repeatedly.A cloud of dust rose.I could not eat.I was taken aback seeing his rudeness and stopped eating.At that night I was thrown into the cell of the police station.

拘留所四面の垣、夜もすがら、大工職人して厳重に拵へたる、果たして何の心ぞや。

A group of carpenters were busy all through the night building a solid  fence around the detention cells.I wondered why they were doing this.

翌日、監獄に移さる。又々奇なることあり。正造を偶すること俄に鄭重になり、或は御世辞を言ひ、秋風立ちて今は草木凋落せるにも拘らず、獄中の悒鬱を御慰め申さんとて、花草奇木を獄庭に集め、

Next day I was transferred to a prison.The situation became queerer.They suddenly began to treat me politely.They even flattered me.Although it was in autumn and flowers were scarce,they collected various flowers and rare trees in the prison garden saying to console me.

終に三島より、立派な差入物すらありて、此頃に至りては、朋友の差入物と衝突するにすら至れり。七十九日、公判に廻すこともなく再び佐野の警察へ廻送す。

Finally I received a magnificent gift sent by Gov.Mishima.He repeatedly sent me his gifts.I was busy receiving his gift and at the same time gifts from my friends.In 79 days I was sent back to Sano Police Station without being given a chance to stand before a judge at the court.

正造、獄に在るの日、県庁の開庁式ありて、弦歌の声、獄中に響き渡りける。道路も成功して、三条太政大臣、開庁に来る。

While Shozo was in prison,the opening ceremony of the new prefectural buildings was held.Songs and musical sounds filled the prison.The new roads also were completed.Daijo-daijin Sanjo,head adviser to the Emperor,attended the ceremony.

祝詞を捧ぐるものあり。この祝詞中に封書あり、是れ即ち三島弾劾の建議書なりしと云ふ。県下老弱を問はず、三島を怖るること鬼の如く、蛇蝎の如し。

Complimentary speeches were made.Speeches were written on expensive paper which were handed over to the master of ceremony after they were read aloud.Someone secretly gave the MC an envelope with the paper.I was told that a letter accusing Gov.Mishima was contained in the envelope.All men and women,young or old,in the prefecture were terrified by Mishima like a devil and hated him like a scorpion or a serpent.

三条公、内閣にて三島処分の議を開く。可否同数、漸く三条公の意にて、栃木を去らしむるに決せりと云ふ。

Later Sanjo held a cabinet meeting and the problem of Mishima was discussed.A half of the ministers agreed to punish him but the other half opposed.People said that Sanjo who presided the meeting decided to remove him from Tochigi Prefecture.

三島通庸、県令を免ぜられて、正造獄から出でたれば、郡民歓喜狂迎、数十流の旗押し立て、十二月晦日、佐野春日岡の大寺院に大歓迎会を開く。警察の干渉至らざるなし。

Mishima Michitsune had been dismissed and Shozo was freed from prison.People in the county welcomed me.They rejoiced immensely.They paraded with tens of banners.On the last day of December a huge welcome party was held at a big temple in Kasugaoka,Sano.Police intervened in every possible way.

田中正造 1841年12月15日 - 1913年（大正2年）9月4日Tanaka Shozo dedicated his life for the farmers who were victimized by the pollution of Ashio Copper Mine. He is one of the pioneers of environmental movement in Japan.
