自叙伝(6) Tanaka Shozo Autobiography

1881年　３９歳

十七年の事をお話せんとせば、矢張り十六年、十六年を言はんとせば矢張り十五年、その十五年は十四年にありて、詰る所は十三年より順次に言わねばならぬ。

I cannot jump from the 13th year to the 17th year.When I try to write about the 17th year,I have to explain about the 16th year.I cannot skip the years between the 13th and 17th year.

十四年には北海道開拓使払下事件に付出京。また地方巡回演舌毎月毎月。

In the 14th year of Meiji,1881,a scandal about the Hokkaido Development Agency shook the Government in Tokyo.Kuroda Kiyotaka,director,was accused of selling public properties such as a beer brewery for a low price to his friend.I went up to Tokyo as the political struggle was intensified.Also I was kept busy making speeches in local cities month in month out.

自由党未だ組織せざるの前、専らこれに従事す。合はざる所あり、九月同会を去る。十月、自由党の組織成る。

I worked with those people who later came to establish the Liberal Party.In September,however,I finally decided to leave this group because of some difference of opinions.In October the Liberal Party was officially organized.

十四年春、参事藤川、県令となる。三月議員を饗応す。正造その席の無礼を憤り臀を向けて膳につく。県令之を耻ず。官尊民卑大に改まる。

In spring of the 14th year Fujikawa Tamechika,Vice Governor,became Governor.He entertained the members of the assembly with meals and sake.I got so mad seeing his impoliteness and arrogance that I sat with my back facing him.He was ashamed.I think he learned that not all private citizens are subservient to government officials!

十四年の暮より十五年に改進政学社を組織し、七百名を募る。

I organized a political group,Kaishin-Seigakusha,from the end of the 14th year to early following year with 700 members.

此年、東京横浜毎日新聞の野村本之助、赤羽萬二郎の両氏を栃木新聞社に聘し、大に地方民権の拡充を図る。社長斎藤清澄本社に多く金員を投ず。

I invited Nomura Motonosuke and Akabane Mannjiro to the Tochigi Newspaper from the influential Tokyo Yokohama Newspaper in order to expand the local movement of  people's rights.Saito Kiyosumi,president,offered a lot of money to the company.

田中正造 1841年12月15日 - 1913年（大正2年）9月4日Tanaka Shozo dedicated his life for the farmers who were victimized by the pollution of Ashio Copper Mine. He is one of the pioneers of environmental movement in Japan.
