自叙伝(3) Tanaka Shozo Autobiography

187８年　3６歳

正造、土佐に行き、板垣に面会して、民選議院の決行を図らんとす。病ありて果たさず。

I wanted to go to Tosa or Kochi,Shikoku Island,and meet Itagaki in order to open the House of Representatives which had been stipulated in the Constitution.My illness prevented me to make the trip. Itagaki Taisuke(1837 - 1919）was one of the leaders who had fought Tokugawa Shogunate and the president of a political party which aimed to strengthen the ordinary people's right.

筆を執て、数十日、漸く一篇の文章を為し、国会開設すべき時期なる所以を認めて建白となし、朋友山口信治氏を以て、先づ県令に添翰を求めしむ。

In stead I took a pen and tried to put my idea on paper.After a few tens of days I completed a statement in which I argued that now was the time to open the House of Representatives.I asked Mr.Yamaguchi Shinji,my trusted friend,to take my letter to the Governor of the Prefecture and ask him to co-sign it.

実に明治十一年三月なりき。正造、病ますます重くして久しく起たず、後に山口氏之を果たさざりしを聞けり。

This was March,the 11th year of Meiji.My illness was so severe that I hardly could leave my bed for a long time.Later I heard from Mr.Yamaguchi that he could not get his job done.

田中正造 1841年12月15日 - 1913年（大正2年）9月4日Tanaka Shozo dedicated his life for the farmers who were victimized by the pollution of Ashio Copper Mine. He is one of the pioneers of environmental movement in Japan.
